Jeremy Fairbairn headed a KMR Sport 1-2 in a thrilling opening race of the year for the GB4 Championship at Oulton Park.
The American went wheel-to-wheel with his teammate on multiple occasions, but somehow kept his cool to take victory on his GB4 debut.
Their battle ensured it was close behind too, with Cooper Webster taking a podium for series newcomers Evans GP, and only eight tenths of a second away from the race winner.
Shoot-Out winner Colin Queen was fourth on his GB4 debut, having challenged Webster for the podium on occasion, while Josh Irfan's first single-seater race netted him fifth for Elite Motorsport.
Single-seater newcomer Liam McNeilly claimed a top-six for Fox Motorsport on their series debut, ahead of Fortec's Ruhaan Alva and KMR Sport's third car of Jack Clifford.
Harry Burgoyne Jnr (Graham Brunton Racing) and Harri Reynolds (Elite) completed the top-10 in a thoroughly entertaining race.
Mills may have been dominant in qualifying, but Fairbairn alongside him made the better start and held the lead into Old Hall.
Mills seemed the quicker of the two, but was unable to find a way past, having challenged at Knickerbrook early on, they then crossed the line side-by-side on two occasions with Mills trying to take the inside line at Old Hall, only for Fairbairn to somehow hold him off around the outside.
The pair continued to battle, echoing the scenes of the KMR intra-team battles between Mills and Jarrod Waberski last year, but American ace Fairbairn held his nerve to win by less than three tenths of a second.
The GB4 field are back in action again on Monday with the second race due to start at 12.10.
