British GT: Loggie and Gounon win second race

10 April 2023

Jules Gounon and Ian Loggie won the second Intelligent Money British GT Championship race this afternoon in the #1 2 Seas Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 after a straight fight with RAM Racing's Rafaelle Marciello and John Ferguson was curtailed by a penalty for the latter.

Marciello had been chasing Gounon for the first half of the race with the two drivers pulling themselves well ahead of their GT3 rivals in a fierce duel. Through lapped GT4s, they ended up nose to tail but a rare mistake from Marciello at Island Bend put him five seconds behind as the pit sequences opened.

Gounon pitted first to switch to teammate Loggie and a lap later, Marciello came in to hand over to Ferguson. As Loggie came round, Ferguson came out well ahead and after two laps himself had a five second lead. Loggie began the hunt but then Ferguson was called in for a one-second stop-go penalty for too short a pitstop.

After serving the penalty, Ferguson still came out in second, showing how good Marciello's pace had been. Loggie was then able to lead from the front to the flag and won the race with half a minute to Ferguson.

Third place was Alex West and Marvin Kirchhöfer in the #88 Garage 59 McLaren 720S GT3. After Kirchhöfer passed Dan Harper in the #91 Century Motorsport BMW M4 GT3, their podium never looked threatened. The gap was gradually closing on Ferguson in the latter stages but West was unable to get a move completed.

This morning's winners, James Cottingham and Jonny Adam, were fourth in their #4 2 Seas Motorsport Mercedes-AMG with the #97 Beechdean AMR in fifth at the hands of Ross Gunn and Andrew Howard. Harper and teammate Darren Leung crossed the line sixth with just over a second back to Shaun Balfe in the #78 Barwell Motorsport Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo that he shares with Sandy Mitchell.

GT4 victory went to the #29 Race Lab McLaren Artura GT4 of Ian Gough and Tom Wrigley with over 8 seconds further back to Jack Brown and Charles Clarke in the #90 Optimum Motorsport McLaren.
