Dan Cammish completed a lights-to-flag victory in the first Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship race of the weekend this afternoon (Sunday). The win for the NAPA Racing UK driver marks his first BTCC win at Oulton Park after converting from pole position to cross the line ahead of Josh Cook.
Cammish led away from pole position in his Ford Focus Titanium after getting a good launch off the line, with his stablemate and championship leader Ash Sutton also making a strong start from third to run side-by-side with Josh Cook through Old Hall Corner heading into Cascades. The pair made contact though, and Sutton was nearly tipped into a spin but pulled off a mighty save to only drop down to tenth place.
Ahead, Cammish continued in the lead, followed by Cook and Tom Ingram in third, who set about chasing the leading pair in his Team VERTU Hyundai i30N. Further down the grid, another NAPA Ford was getting into trouble as Lewis Selby found himself turned into the barriers on the run down to Druids, bringing out a safety car.
When the race resumed on lap five, Sutton initially recovered to sixth but he attempted a brave move around the outside of the Plato Racing Mercedes of Adam Morgan at the Hislops chicane which didn’t pay off as the four-time champion ran wide and lost places once again.
Meanwhile, Cammish held firm in the lead, holding off an initial challenge from Cook before the Speedworks Corolla Racing Toyota began to drop back into the grasps of Ingram. However, the chasing Hyundai was just missing the last tenth of speed needed to make a move on Cook as Cammish led home the pair to achieve a first win at the Cheshire venue.
With an important podium secured, Ingram took a few points out of Sutton’s lead as Sutton clawed back from his second excursion off track to finish seventh after Morgan retired with a technical issue. Árón Taylor-Smith enjoyed another strong finish in fourth, while Aiden Moffat claimed fifth for the LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing team. The sister Audi A3 Saloon of Mikey Doble was sixth, with the aforementioned Sutton seventh. Tom Chilton claimed eighth after a late-race move on the Restart Racing Hyundai of Chris Smiley, with the WSR BMW of Daryl De Leon completing the top-10.
