Dan Cammish claimed his first Race to Pole win in the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park this afternoon after Árón Taylor-Smith lost the victory following a time penalty for a safety car restart infringement. The NAPA Racing UK driver secured the best starting position for Sunday’s triple-header as a result.
Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport’s Taylor-Smith started from first, getting a good launch when the lights went out to hold off Cammish into the first corner, with Josh Cook passing Mikey Doble’s Audi A3 Saloon through Cascades to claim third place. Further back, Nicolas Hamilton found the barriers on the run down to Island Bend on lap two to bring out an early safety car.
As the safety car pulled into the pitlane on lap six, Taylor-Smith initially made a good restart but was later given a five-second penalty for weaving. Cammish applied some early pressure for the on-track lead, but after the news of the Toyota’s penalty, the Leeds driver held station in second, fending off a late attack from the Speedworks Corolla Racing machine of Josh Cook to cross the line in second and claim the win after Taylor-Smith’s penalty was applied.
Championship protagonists Ash Sutton and Tom Ingram had a race-long battle for fourth place behind Cook, with the four-time champion coming out on top over the defending champion to extend his lead at the top of the standings and inherit a third-place finish. Ingram finished directly behind in fourth for Team VERTU, while the demoted Taylor-Smith rounded out the top five.
Mikey Doble dropped from third to sixth for the LKQ Euro Car Parts with Power Maxed Racing team, while Plato Racing’s Adam Morgan crossed the line in seventh. The Audi of Dexter Patterson finished in eighth, while Aiden Moffat and Chris Smiley finished ninth and tenth respectively, with the Restart Racing machine fighting up from 16th on the grid.
