Andrew Hibberd added his name to the roll of honour at Oulton Park’s signature event by claiming the crown in this year’s Historic Gold Cup across two races this weekend.

This year’s Historic Gold Cup, which pays homage to the original event’s headline prize, was awarded in the Historic Formula 3 class for one-litre ‘screamers’ machinery. This class of car, which originally raced from 1964 until 1970 celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Hibberd impressed in both Historic Gold Cup races, winning each by a comfortable margin at the wheel of his Brabham BT18. He was joined on the podium in the first race on Saturday by Michael O’Brien and Enrico Spaggiari. The latter finished runner-up on Sunday with Peter de la Roche finishing third whilst O’Brien retired.

Other notable performers included Michael Lyons in the Derek Bell Trophy series for powerful 1970s single-seaters including Formula 5000 cars. A regular frontrunner when F5000 cars have starred at the Gold Cup during its historic era, Lyons won both races in his Lola T400.

The Historic Grand Prix Car Association returned to the Gold Cup too this year for a pair of special 70th Anniversary Gold Cup celebration races to celebrate the fixture’s heritage as a non-championship F1 event. Rudi Friedrichs won on Saturday at the wheel of a Cooper T53 whilst Charlie Martin claimed the spoils a day later in his similar machine.
