Justin Maeers wrote his name into the Oulton Park history books by sealing victory in the 2023 Historic Gold Cup this afternoon (Sunday). The Brabham BT11A driver secured his second Historic Grand Prix Car Association (HGPCA) win of the weekend to seal the circuit’s headline prize on aggregate following his earlier success on Saturday.
Charlie Martin made a superb start to the race at the wheel of his Cooper T53 to lead early on, but Maeers was back ahead by the time the pack crossed the finish line for the sixth time. From there, Martin pressured Maeers closely as they lapped the International circuit, but there was no firm opening to make a pass.
Maeers resisted the remaining pressure as the 20-minute race drew to a conclusion, passing the chequered flag first at the end of the 11th tour. With Maeers winning both of the HGPCA races for classically modelled Grand Prix machines, he was awarded the Historic Gold Cup in homage to the original prize won in period by Stirling Moss, Jim Clark and Jack Brabham.
Martin remained on Maeers’ tail right until the end of the race, eventually crossing the line just 0.405s adrift of the victory. Further back, Tony Lees completed the podium in another Cooper T53 as a strong weekend continued for machinery from the famous British Grand Prix marque. Other Coopers followed in fourth and fifth with Tom Waterfield and Rod Jolley’s examples rounding out the top-five.
John Spiers led the contingent of front-engined machines in sixth at the wheel of a Maserati 250F, as raced to victory in the first two Gold Cups in 1954 and ’55 in addition to the first Historic Gold Cup in 1981.
